Crashes on the Rise: Call to Action on the Road to Zero Fatalities

ZendriveZendrive

Recently, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the non-profit National Safety Council released stats on an alarming spike in traffic fatalities.

The DOT’s report showed that in 2015, the number of traffic fatalities reached 35,092, a 7.2% increase over 2014. The last time there was such a large single-year increase was back in 1966.

Even more troubling is the increase in traffic fatalities in 2016.

According to an analysis by the National Safety Council, the number of traffic fatalities during the first 5 months of the year (15,430) was 9% higher than during the same period in 2015 (14,210) and 17% higher than the same period in 2014 (13,167).

The data also showed an estimated 2.2 million injuries in the first half of 2016 and an increasing fatality rate relative to population and miles traveled.

Crashes Cost Billions

Not only do crashes cost lives, they cost billions of dollars.

Findings showed an expected total cost of $205.5 billion nationwide in the first half of 2016 – reflecting the cost of deaths, injuries and property damage.

Furthermore, studies have shown that crashes cost employers almost 3 million workdays and $60 billion a yearAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, crashes are the #1 cause of work related deaths, ahead of violence, falls, equipment injury and exposure to harmful substances.

The U.S. DOT has made a stance about the importance of using data to solve this problem.

Anthony Foxx, mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, speaks during a news conference at the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting in New York, U.S., on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton announced today that Cisco Systems Inc. and Duke Energy Corp. plan to link office towers such as the Bank of America Corp. headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, to a so-called smart grid to cut energy use. Solving this problem will take teamwork, so we’re issuing a call to action and asking researchers, safety experts, data scientists, and the public to analyze the fatality data and help find ways to prevent these tragedies.”

How You Can Help

It is now more important than ever that we make a committed effort to supporting the road to zero fatalities.

90% of crashes are due to human error. Drivers can make roads safer by reducing risky driving behavior. Start today by simply putting phones down and obeying restrictions like these that forbid drivers from “holding and operating” phones for any reason.

Parents can use Life360 Driver Protect, the safest mobility service out there that automatically detects if you and your family are in a serious accident and immediately contacts emergency responders and family members. Unlike other crash response services, Life360 Driver Protect doesn’t require purchasing and installing an expensive device in your car. The app-based solution travels with your family on their smartphone, getting you assistance when and where it’s needed most.

Cities can advocate for Vision Zero, the worldwide initiative to end traffic fatalities. City officials working to increase road safety in their municipalities can reach out to us at safercities@zendrive.com to learn how Zendrive can support your efforts.
