3 Ways to Cultivate a Culture of Safety in Your Fleet

Culture is a reflection of who you are. It is the system of values, disciplines and practices that define how people live life. If you don’t build your culture, one will form on its own (and you might not like what you get). Cultivating a culture of safety demonstrates your level of commitment to the lives of your employees, customers and the general public.

But what does it take to cultivate a true culture of safety in your fleet?

Make Safety Everyone’s Business

When cultivating a culture of safety, the responsibility does not fall on one team. It is a critical company-wide effort that requires every department’s participation and support.

Safety directors will often struggle to get fleet managers to promote messages and enforce policies. Uniting these two teams is your first step towards getting buy-in from drivers and getting participation across the fleet. Last of all, Dave explained that safety isn’t something that’s talked about on occasion. “To meet such a high standard, you cannot be reactive. We are always talking about safety and proactively address issues.”
